Caves Connect Launch Night

All set and ready to Connect … in hindsight though when I started thinking about this concept at the beginning of the year I did not imagine we would have over 130 businesses already on the Caves Beach Connect website (with more coming out of the woodwork everyday) let alone that we’d be running a launch event with 80 guests registering within the first 7 days.

When I moved back to Caves I didn’t even think I could run a design business from here, and 12 years or so later I guess a lot can be said for the internet and social media in that it can give you the independence you need if you use it like the tool that it’s meant to be.

Plus it really goes to show that you need to back yourself and take risks now and then because you never really know until you try. And if you fail, (I have many times in different ventures) it’s ok because you take gold away every time which you would never ever get otherwise! And that gold becomes useful treasure in new situations moving forward.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow night. I can’t wait to meet new people … having a laugh with new conversations … it’s going to be great and even if it isn’t I’ll be sure to take a little gold away from it.

This event will take place in Lake Macquarie.

What Problem Does Your Business Solve?

What Problem Does Your Business Solve?

what problem does your business solve?

what problem does your business solve?

While not all businesses look at themselves as problem solvers, every business I have come across does solve a problem for their clients or customers. Whether it is a problem of what to wear, what to eat, how to keep your windows clean, how to remove a tree from your yard or what kind of kitchen to build, all businesses solve problems.

Many businesses forget or overlook this important aspect and instead of asking ‘how can I solve others problems?’, they skip straight to ‘how do I make more money?’

why focus on problem solving?

Basically, people will only give money to you or your business if you make their life easier, you fulfil a need or desire or they can make more money themselves. People are creatures of habit and by making peoples lives easier you are taking out the stress in their day to day which is what people are willing to pay for.

Focusing on what problem you solve can be a great inspiration for your business. Remember that when someone is looking for a business to use they are thinking ‘can this person/business solve my problem? And can they do it better than another business (your competition) can?’ You want them to decide yes, your business is the right one to pick. With this in mind it makes sense to structure a business around the problem it solves.

how does focussing on problem solving help my business?

When you understand what is the exact problem that you are solving you can tailor all of your marketing communications to help people understand this. These become your points of differentiation, your positioning and your brand. Your business culture can also be tailored around this aspect and what problem your business solves can be embedded into the culture.

Rather than the focus being on what your business does in general, focus on what your business does for its clients or customers. For example rather than a business claiming ‘we mow peoples lawns’, they should be thinking more along the lines of ‘we give clients a desirable yard’ or ‘we give clients there weekend back’.

monitoring your problem solving skills

I strive to exceed my clients expectations. I not only want to solve the problem at hand but do it to the best of my ability. I am constantly monitoring my own business with online questionnaires, project completion workshops and client workshops to help understand my clients expectations and to evaluate how the client felt about my business and work once it is completed.

I have learnt new skills (see Just in Time Learning) to ensure I can complete a job at hand to the best of my ability. If you monitor your problem solving skills and continue to strive for excellent results for your clients your business will grow through word of mouth and testimonials and you will be able to solve more clients or customers problems and thus adding more value to your business.

to sum up

Once you have deeply considered the problem/s you solve for your clients of customers you can use this information to aid the design of your business. It also leads into one of the most important aspects of a business ‘what is your why?’ Which is basically why you do what you do!

My 5 Tech Hacks for Running a Business

My 5 Tech Hacks for Running a Business

my 5 tech hacks for running a business

is technology friend or foe? my 5 tech hacks for running a business

I recently shared my top 5 tech hacks that have helped me run and grow my business now for over 13 years. This video is a summary of my 15 minute presentation to the Lake Macquarie Business Chamber but it should give you an insight into my business approach that has helped me maintain a lifestyle and remain lean and agile whilst still growing in a global and competitive market.

1. data is king

The ability to track your own data in your business is a game changer that every business owner should be doing. When you track data on your key business metrics you can acutely understand the operation of your business.

There is an old saying, you can’t improve what you can’t measure and hence when you are aware of your business data you can finely tune your inputs and outputs to get you closer to your optimal results.

Modern software and applications and iOT devices give us access to all kinds of metrics from our business operations allowing us to be aware of it and improve it.

What is the one metric you could be measuring to improve your business?

2. continuous improvement

I use a system called Automate, Eliminate & Delegate to continuously improve my business through small steps that overtime can make large improvements to my business operation.

Automate is taking out the human aspect of a task by automating it. I have been able to cut time on many things by automating them which new technologies provide.

Eliminate is getting rid of a task all together. Either by automating them or finding a way so they are no longer needed at all.

Delegate is giving a task to someone else. My admin assistant was great for this at first, and now I have been able to employ a junior designer to pass things onto as well.

3. differentiation

What is the one thing that makes your business different and how can your business stand out from the crowd?

Determining this will help you differentiate your business and can influence the design of your brand which can be expressed through technological platforms such as your website, social media, video and blogging.

You can also use branding to differentiate your business from your competitors in a cluttered market. Learn more on differentiation here.

4. content marketing speeds trust

Content marketing can help build trust and generate business. Unlike other marketing, content marketing must give customers something useful … content! It is not focussed on producing demand for a new need or product but rather focussed on giving something valuable to new and old customers.

The world of content marketing is now available because of the interactive nature of the internet through social media, websites, blogs, podcasts and video. Learn more about how content marketing speeds trust here.

5. authenticity is the new advertising

Advertising has taken a huge shift in recent years. In the past businesses advertised on the range of media where advertising was available. TV, radio, print, billboards etc, this type of advertising is still a large outlet but is now being replaced by social media, blogs, podcasts, youtube, websites and many more digital applications.

Due to this shift, we can not simply advertise to build an audience, we need to build connections with people in an authentic and engaging mindset where the user feels connected to the supplier. New technologies enable this. Learn more about how authenticity is killing advertising here.

in summary

So that’s my 5 top tech hacks to running a business which are not at all frightening as they are a combination of human traits merging with technology … they are part mind, part machine utilising a combination of human know-how with modern technology giving the small business owner huge leverage in the market place.

technology – friend or foe?

More people sharing knowledge, at faster speeds and lower costs, than ever before.
