A quick guide to content marketing

A quick guide to content marketing

A quick guide to Content Marketing

A quick guide to Content Marketing

The practice of ‘Content Marketing’ is fast becoming the premier tool in the SEO marketing toolbox.

Content Marketing is the practice of supplying targeted, relevant and sharable content to your audience in the hope that it will be shared, liked and enquired about. It is a method of turning potential customers into leads whilst adding indexed content to your website that is best shared on social media platforms.

The goal of successful content marketing strategy is to create compelling content that is sharable, original and relevant to your brand whilst being indexed on the web.

Content Marketing can come in a few mediums that will ultimately be published on a page or blog post on your website and linked to from other websites.

Examples of content marketing are;

  1. A news or blog article
  2. An image with supporting copy
  3. A video
  4. An infographic
  5. A sound clip
  6. A meme

Content developed should be interesting, original, useful & newsworthy. It should not be boring and ignorable and it should never be plagiarised. Plagiarised content is easily traceable online which will quickly erode your brands credibility.

When determining content, this should ultimately fit into context of an overall brand communication strategy. This will help your audience learn and understand your brand personality.

The Content Marketing strategy should be agreed upon by your team so that any content created fit’s into the context of organisational goals and the brands personality.

A good Content Marketing Strategy will increase your website SEO rankings. Putting it into practice will generating fresh and relevant content encouraging search engine robots to come back to re-index and rank your website.

Relevant keywords should also be used in your articles as these get associated with your brand, via your URL through permalinks and meta data.

Linking to these articles from various social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn will also generate new links to your website adding to the link weight of your website.

If you’re passionate about your brand, company, product or service, it should not be too hard to create original content within a content marketing strategy as this should come natural to you. It’s just a matter of presenting your ideas in interesting and engaging ways. It’s even better if you can express your brand and personality through the content so that it has your mark on it.

Are you responsive?

Are you responsive?

Are you Responsive?

Are you Responsive?

Have you heard of the term, ‘responsive website‘?

If not, it’s a buzz word for a ‘mobile friendly website’ which is a website that responds to the device at hand, whether that be a desktop, tablet, television or phone (and soon to be watch).

A responsive websites’ layout will actually change and optimally adapt to the devices screen size compared to it being scaled down to fit.

Check out my responsive website as an example…

Responsive Web

With the infiltration of these new devices and a culture moving to mobile, for the past 2 years or so all of the websites I have developed have been responsive. This is mainly due to consumer trends to browse the web on devices other than their desktop.

I’m sure your’e probably already doing it this way too, the web truly has gone mobile.

Also, get this, as of April 21, Google has announced that they will be preferring to display websites in their search engine rankings that are responsive compared to sites that are not responsive in all search queries performed on a mobile.

See this statement from Google below;

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

To help, Google has also provided a mobile friendly testing website which lets you enter your domain name. Google then analyses your website and gives you a thumbs up or down from a mobile friendly point of view.

To see this in action check out my test below. Feel free to change my domain to your domain to see how your site performs.

Google Mobile Friendly Test

The good news is that your site can be redesigned with a functional responsive theme in mind so that it leverages the opportunities presented in the mobile world.

If you’re interested in taking your website mobile, let us know and we can review your website to see how it can be made responsive and supply you with a quotation to develop it. This may even be an opportunity to assess and modernise your websites functionally & aesthetics.

In any case, please feel free to ask any questions concerning this issue.

Here’s an update on some of the psyborg® design work & developments over the past few months.

Mac Attack

We’ve been busy going all Mac in the studio. For some time I had a mixture of PCs and Macs running, but now with iOS8 set to launch soon I have set up the studio with two new iMacs (psyMacs), which integrate nicely with my iPad (psyPad) and iPhone (psyPhone).

Now that we’re paperless we’re starting to leverage the cloud even more with some exciting developments on the horizon. One thing I have learned with business automation and leveraging the cloud is that you need to get all of your ducks (or devices) in a row to create the synergy required to run an agile business.

Keeping Your WordPress Website Up to Date

For most of my website clients I maintain their WordPress dashboard. This is necessary so that it stays up to date with the latest evolution of WordPress, latest plugins and latest theme files. This usually occurs bimonthly. Check out my latest psyblog article explaining the steps that I take.

What is WordPress?

For those who don’t know WordPress is one of the most popular Content Management Systems (CMS) available, enabling web publishers to take control over their content. I have been designing and developing WordPress websites for over five years now completing more than 75 website projects on this platform.

Here is a small list of some of my most recent website project completions;

Mobler Design

Mobler Design lets you customise architect-designed furniture before you purchase it.

Conversant Media

We recently went live with Conversant Media’s new website showcasing it’s successful online publications and business approach.

ScooterHub

Newcastle now has a Scooter Hire service where you can book a scooter online. In close consultation with my client we also developed ScooterHubs’ brand, print materials & vehicle signage.

Bend + Mend

Bend + Mend is a physiotherapist with four clinics located in the Sydney CBD. I worked closely with Bend + Mend to customise their WordPress theme to reflect the organisation’s professionalism and personality.

Hamilton Loan Office

With pawn shops being all the rage now with the success of some U.S. TV programs Hamilton Loan Office thought it was time to go online and begin communicating there business to the world.

Branding, Print and Signage

I’ve also completed a heap of logos, printed campaigns and signage projects over the past few months that you can get a glimpse of over at my Facebook feed.

That’s it for now, thanks for reading.

WordPress Updating Process

WordPress Updating Process

WordPress Updating Process

WordPress Updating Process

If you’re already using WordPress as a Content Management System you will know that it continuously evolves and improves, keeping up to date with web trends, offering new functionality and flexibility and resolving security issues.

In essence WordPress driven websites are made up of three components that effect the updating process via the evolution of WordPress.

It is beneficial to ensure that these components remain current as this ensures that your website is kept secure and utilises the best features and functionality available to your website.

These three components that are updated in WordPress are;

1. WordPress Core

Determined by the WordPress development community, this gets updated every couple of months and includes bug fixes, new features, feature improvements and security patches. It is very important to keep this current.

2. 3rd Party Plugins

The timing of this is dependent on the particular plugin developer but these are usually updated when WordPress does an update. Good plugin developers will check there plugins with WordPress compatibility and update there plugin code to ensure it. Plugin updates can also occur when plugin developers improve the plugins functionality. This is why it is necessary to keep your plugins up to date, as plugin inconsistencies can break the site as WordPress evolves.

3. Theme Files

Theme developers will also update there themes to introduce new functionality, bug fixes and to evolve with the most recent version of WordPress. When installing a new theme, it is best practice to set up what’s known as a child theme, with any customisations made in it so you can continue to update WordPress, any plugins and the core theme files without it effecting your previous customisations done.

Issues can occur when WordPress or plugins are updated, and inconsistencies occur between items that can effect the functionality of your website.

Hence, when updating it is good practice to check the site over to see if any issues have occurred. Although rare, if an issue occurs some trouble shooting needs to be done to find out if the theme or a particular plugin is causing the issue.

A brief guide to troubleshooting is;

  • Check if your theme files have an update and if so update your theme files
  • De-activate all of your plugins and re activate one by one to see which plugin is causing then issue
  • Contact this plugin developer to see if there is a bug fix and update available
  • Remove it and find a new one with similar functionality to replace it
  • Test and establish any inconsistencies compared to the last working version

If you are a business owner and do not have the time or will to do this, psyborg® offers an annual ‘WordPress Maintenance Service’ that covers this process. Contact Us to learn more.
