A yarn about a Backyard Battle and a Lesson in Resilience!
Three days out from settlement, the contract was clear: mow the lawn. Simple enough, until I discovered the backyard had new landlords. Two understandingly protective plovers, three chicks and an egg they’d defend at all costs.
The moment I pulled the mower cord, the sky turned hostile. Swoop after swoop, wings clipping past my ears, sharp beaks and relentless noise. I nearly gave up, more than once … afterall these guys were once dinosaurs.
But giving up isn’t in my DNA.
So I adapted. A towel became armour, sunnies a visor, earmuffs a battle helm, and Coldplay in my ears kept me focused. Later a neighbour’s bike helmet gave me reinforcements, and a selfie stick became my makeshift sword (until it snapped mid-battle).
It wasn’t pretty. For over two hours the plovers got their hits in. But I kept pushing line after line, until the lawn was done.
The chicks stayed safe, the egg untouched, and I walked away with the win.
The lesson? You’ll never outmatch a parent defending their young — and I 100% respect and love that. But resilience means standing your ground, adapting when things break, and seeing the job through.
In business, like in backyards, persistence matters. The ability to push forward, even under pressure, is what gets results.
