Throwback vibes with a fresh twist!
We took inspiration from the bold surf culture of the ’70s and ’80s to create this iconic new logo for Caves Beach Boardriders.
Vintage meets modern coastal.
Surf club branding carries specific cultural weight. The aesthetic needs to reference surf heritage without becoming costume nostalgia. That balance determines whether the logo feels authentic or performative.
70s and 80s surf graphics work because they emerged from actual beach culture—hand-painted boards, DIY screen printing, guerrilla marketing sensibility. Referencing that era connects to genuine design lineage rather than arbitrary retro styling.
The challenge is executing vintage influence through modern production. Contemporary tools enable precision those original designs couldn’t achieve. Too much refinement kills the raw energy. Not enough looks amateur rather than intentionally loose.
Caves Beach brings local specificity. The logo needs to work for this particular surf community—recognisable to locals, distinct from neighbouring clubs, functional across merchandise applications. Generic surf aesthetics fail that test immediately.
Boardrider clubs operate on volunteer energy and limited budgets. Logo design often represents their entire professional branding investment. That single mark needs to work on rashies, stickers, social media, event signage—complete visual identity compressed into one versatile symbol.
Community organisations deserve design work that respects their culture and serves their practical needs equally.
