The Origin Story
When my kids were little, there was a character in our house called Bonky … half boy, half monkey.
He “lived in the roof.”
And whenever the kids asked for him, I’d go and fetch him.
What followed was chaos… chasing, tickling, play fighting…
hours of pure family entertainment.
No screens. Just imagination.
What’s interesting is Bonky didn’t start there.
I actually created him years earlier with a mate in a comic book when I was 19.
An idea that sat dormant… then came to life again in a completely different context.
That matters.
Because that’s exactly how ideas work.
The Shift: AI as a Creative Multiplier
Fast forward to today.
With the help of AI, my youngest and I have brought Bonky back again… this time as a retro 80s-inspired sitcom concept.
Not just a memory.
Not just a character.
A world.
This is where things change.
AI video tools are no longer just novelties. They are becoming production engines … allowing creators to:
- Generate characters
- Build environments
- Produce episodes
- Test ideas quickly
- Iterate without traditional cost barriers
What once required a studio… now requires intent.
And that opens something bigger.
Bonky as a Case Study
Bonky isn’t just a funny concept.
He’s a prototype for what’s now possible.
1. Short-Form Web Series
A 1–2 minute episodic format:
- Fast production
- Repeatable structure
- Scalable storytelling
Each episode driven by simple inputs… stitched together with character logic.
This is AI-native storytelling.
2. Character-Led Content
Bonky can exist beyond episodes:
- Social clips
- Commentary
- Reactions
- Micro stories
A character that can continuously produce content.
3. YouTube & Streaming Format
With consistency, Bonky becomes:
- A webisode series
- A channel
- A world with recurring characters
The barrier to entry is no longer production… it’s clarity of concept.
4. Merch & Brand Extensions
Once a character lands:
- T-shirts
- Toys
- Stickers
- Digital assets
The same way 80s characters extended into culture…
this can now happen faster and leaner.
5. AI Influencer Potential
This is where it gets interesting.
Bonky isn’t just a character…
He could become a talking monkey influencer.
- Posting regularly
- Developing a voice
- Building an audience
- Interacting in real-time
Not controlled by a production schedule…
but by a creative system.
The Real Opportunity
This isn’t about Bonky.
It’s about what Bonky represents.
An idea that moved through three phases:
- Comic book concept
- Real-world play with kids
- AI-driven digital character
Same idea. Different mediums.
Now scalable.
What This Means for Creators
We’re entering a phase where:
- Ideas don’t need permission
- Production doesn’t need infrastructure
- Characters don’t need actors
- Stories don’t need budgets
They need:
- A clear concept
- A repeatable system
- A point of view
The rest can be built.
Closing the Loop
Bringing Bonky back wasn’t just a creative experiment.
It felt like reconnecting with something unfinished… and finally having the tools to realise it properly.
From imagination… to reality… to scalability.
That’s the shift.
What’s Next?
Bonky might become:
- A short-form series
- A YouTube channel
- A character-led brand
- A piece of merch
- Or something else entirely
That’s the point.
- It doesn’t have to be defined upfront.
- It just has to start.
Design with intent.
Creativity, fuelled by logic.
Part mind. Part machine.
