AI art generation operates in the space between intention and interpretation. You provide direction—subject, style, composition—but the AI makes thousands of micro-decisions about how to render that vision. The results sit somewhere between your concept and the machine’s interpretation.
This “Messy Messi” series explores that tension deliberately. Take an iconic subject—one of the world’s most recognisable athletes, and push it through AI processing that emphasises abstraction over accuracy. The messiness becomes the point.
Traditional illustration or photography would capture Messi precisely. AI art captures something else. The essence filtered through algorithmic interpretation. Colour, form, energy, movement—all present, but reassembled in ways human artists wouldn’t naturally choose.
This matters for commercial creative work. When clients want “something different” but can’t articulate what that means, AI-generated concepts provide visual starting points that wouldn’t emerge from conventional brainstorming. Not final outputs necessarily, but directional inspiration that sparks conversation.
The practical skill is learning to prompt for useful abstraction. Too vague and you get visual noise. Too specific and you constrain the AI’s interpretive capability. The sweet spot produces images that feel intentional while remaining surprising.
These experiments aren’t portfolio pieces for client presentation. They’re creative exploration that builds prompt engineering capability and visual intuition for what AI tools can deliver.
