I’m in Times Square at the moment and just got interviewed by Fox News, @bigweekendshowfnc, about Trump’s last 100 days. Only in New York could this happen.
Times Square operates as permanent theatre. Tourists, performers, cameras, chaos. Everyone’s simultaneously an observer and participant. The boundaries between planned and spontaneous collapse completely.
That Fox News crew wasn’t hunting for expert political commentary. They needed authentic street reactions—real people responding to current events without media training or talking points. The interview lasted maybe ninety seconds. They ask your opinion, you give it, they move to the next person.
What struck me wasn’t the interview itself but the production machinery behind it. Camera operator, sound technician, producer, on-air talent—executing coordinated workflow in the middle of pedestrian traffic. Professional efficiency amid complete urban disorder.
This mirrors something fundamental about modern content creation. Distribution platforms demand constant feed. News networks, social media, blogs—all require perpetual content generation. The apparatus never stops.
For a design studio observing media production methods, it’s instructive. Speed matters. Volume matters. But underneath the velocity, disciplined process enables the output. They’re not winging it—they’re executing repeatable systems under time pressure.
The appearance of spontaneity requires significant structural planning.
Only in New York? Maybe. But the lesson applies anywhere: chaos and process aren’t opposites. They’re collaborators.
